In short

Sade Sati is Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon sign: about seven and a half years, in three phases of about two and a half years each (K. S. Charak, p. 483). In October 2026 Saturn is in Pisces, so Sade Sati is running for these Moon signs: Aries (1st phase, until about May 2032), Aquarius (3rd phase, until about Feb 2028) and Pisces (2nd phase, until about Apr 2030).

Computed by Astrojar's engine (sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa), to the month. A span runs from Saturn's first entry to its final exit: a retrograde dip back into the previous sign for a few months counts as inside.

What are the three phases of Sade Sati?

  • 1st phase (rising) Saturn in the 12th sign from your Moon: expenses and the start of the cycle.
  • 2nd phase (peak) Saturn over your Moon sign itself: traditionally the most felt phase.
  • 3rd phase (setting) Saturn in the 2nd sign from your Moon: wealth and family; the cycle eases off.

Shani dhaiya is the shorter cousin: Saturn in the 4th (Kantaka Shani) or the 8th (Ashtama Shani) sign from the Moon, about two and a half years each.

What are the effects of Sade Sati?

Tradition associates Sade Sati with troubles, worries, losses and wandering, and it is widely feared. The classical authors themselves urge care: K. S. Charak writes that it must not be applied blindly, and that the Moon's placement, its sign and the running dasha decide the results (p. 483). K. S. Krishnamurti, the founder of KP astrology, called Sade Sati, used to explain every difficulty, "a meaningless slogan", and showed a chart that gained during it (KP Reader III, p. 196); one should not conclude the time is evil from Saturn's transit alone (p. 478). Astrojar reads Sade Sati the same way: as a period, weighed with your dasha.

How can you lessen Sade Sati?

Traditional remedies pacify Saturn. These are the ones Astrojar gives during Sade Sati; no gemstone is suggested.

Worship Hanuman or Shani

Questions about Sade Sati

What is Sade Sati?

Sade Sati ("seven and a half") is the period when Saturn transits the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it. Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign (K. S. Charak, Elements of Vedic Astrology, p. 483).

Which rashi has Sade Sati now?

In October 2026 Saturn is in Pisces, so Sade Sati is running for Aries (1st phase), Aquarius (3rd phase) and Pisces (2nd phase) Moon signs. The table gives each sign's dates.

Is Sade Sati good or bad?

Tradition calls it a hard period of worries, losses and travel. But Charak warns against applying it blindly: the Moon's placement in the chart, its sign and the running dasha decide the results (p. 483). K. S. Krishnamurti went further and called it a "meaningless slogan" when used to explain every difficulty (KP Reader III, p. 196).

What happens in the third phase of Sade Sati?

In the third (setting) phase Saturn is in the 2nd sign from the Moon, the house of wealth and family. Traditionally it is the easing-off phase; as with the other phases, the dasha running at the time decides more.

How many times does Sade Sati come in life?

About once every 30 years, as Saturn takes about 30 years to go round the zodiac. A person may have up to three Sade Satis in a lifetime (K. S. Charak, Elements of Vedic Astrology, p. 483).

What is Shani dhaiya?

Shani dhaiya ("two and a half") is Saturn's transit of the 4th (Kantaka or Ardhashtama Shani) or the 8th (Ashtama Shani) sign from the Moon. Each lasts about two and a half years.

How can I overcome Sade Sati?

The traditional remedies pacify Saturn: its mantra, worship of Hanuman or Shani on Saturdays, and charity such as sesame or mustard oil, or helping the elderly. No gemstone is suggested for Sade Sati.
