Ugadi 2027 and Gudi Padwa 2027: dates for 2027 and 2026
The date of Ugadi and Gudi Padwa, the Hindu lunar new year, for 2026 and 2027, and the Pratipada rule that fixes it, computed for New Delhi.
In short
Ugadi 2027 is on Wednesday, 7 April 2027, and Ugadi 2026 on Thursday, 19 March 2026, by Astrojar's Panchang engine for New Delhi. Ugadi (Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana) and Gudi Padwa (Maharashtra) are the lunar new year: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright half of Chaitra. Chaitra Navratri begins the same day.
Ugadi and Gudi Padwa dates for 2026 and 2027
| Year | Date | Tithi (New Delhi, IST) | Lunar month | Sunrise (New Delhi) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Thursday, 19 March 2026 | Shukla Pratipada: 6:53 am, 19 Mar to 4:52 am, 20 Mar | Chaitra (both calendars) | Sunrise 6:26 am; Pratipada begins 6:53 am, after it (kshaya) |

Times are for New Delhi, in IST, from Astrojar's Panchang engine. Lunar months are given both ways: amanta (the month ends at the new moon, as in the south and west) and purnimanta (it ends at the full moon, as in the north).
How the date of Ugadi and Gudi Padwa is fixed
The day is the one on which Pratipada is running at sunrise. If Pratipada starts after one sunrise and ends before the next (a kshaya tithi), the day it begins is taken.
| Year | Day | Sunrise that day | Shukla Pratipada covers it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Wednesday, 18 March 2026 | 6:27 am | No |
| 2026 | Thursday, 19 March 2026 | 6:26 am | No: it begins at 6:53 am, after sunrise, and ends at 4:52 am, 20 Mar, before the next sunrise (kshaya) ← the festival day |
| 2026 | Friday, 20 March 2026 | 6:25 am | No |
| 2027 | Tuesday, 6 April 2027 | 6:06 am | No: it begins later, at 5:20 am, 7 Apr |
| 2027 | Wednesday, 7 April 2027 | 6:05 am | Yes ← the festival day |
| 2027 | Thursday, 8 April 2027 | 6:03 am | No |
The same check on the neighbouring days shows why they were not taken.
A kshaya Pratipada
In 2026 the Pratipada is kshaya: it starts after one sunrise and ends before the next, so it touches no sunrise. The day it begins is taken, and Chaitra Navratri's Ghatasthapana is done after it begins. The lunar month shown is the one the engine names at the next sunrise: at this day's sunrise the previous tithi is still running, so the month there still carries the old name.
Why Ugadi and Gudi Padwa can differ by place and tradition
The Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali and Odia new years follow the Sun's entry into Mesha (Aries) instead, in mid-April, so they fall on another day.

Why do some calendars give a different date for Ugadi (Gudi Padwa)?
A panchang is worked out for one place. Where the tithi begins or ends close to the part of the day the rule looks at, a city east or west of New Delhi can land on the other side of the boundary. Calendars also differ in tradition (amanta or purnimanta, Smarta or Vaishnava) and in the ephemeris they use.
