In short
Star matching for marriage (nakshatra matching) scores the bride's and the groom's Moon nakshatras and Moon signs on the eight kootas of ashtakoot matching: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, 36 gunas in all. By K. S. Charak's bands, 24 to 36 is an excellent match, 12 to 24 average, and under 12 generally not advised (p. 452). It reads the two Moons only; Mangal dosha and the 7th house need both birth charts.
What do I need for nakshatra matching?
Each person's birth nakshatra and its pada: the star the Moon was in at birth, and which quarter of it. They are on any kundli, and the Moon sign follows from them. A date of birth alone is not always enough: the Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day, and through a pada in a few hours. If you have the birth date, time and place, the Kundli Matching Report works the stars out from both charts and adds Mangal dosha on both sides.
How is the score worked out?
Each koota compares one thing about the two Moons and gives 1 to 8 gunas: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, Nadi 8. The tables are read with the bride's sign or star in the rows and the groom's in the columns, as in the book. Every rule, with the worked example the tool reproduces (24 gunas), is in Ashtakoot matching: the 8 kootas, 36 gunas and how many should match. This tool uses the same tables as Astrojar's reports, so the points are the same.
Questions about star matching
How do I do star matching for marriage?
Choose the bride's and the groom's birth nakshatra and pada, the star the Moon was in at birth, and press "Match the stars". The tool gives each of the eight kootas and the total out of 36 gunas, using the tables of K. S. Charak, Elements of Vedic Astrology, ch. XXVII.
Can I do kundali matching by date of birth only, without the time?
Only sometimes. The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day, so on many days it changes star, and the pada changes every few hours. If you know the birth star from a kundli or a family record, use it; if you only know the date, the result may be for the wrong star.
What is a good guna score?
By K. S. Charak's bands, 24 to 36 gunas is an excellent match, 12 to 24 average, and under 12 generally not advised; strict adherence is not needed when the two charts are otherwise favourable (p. 452). Many families use 18 as their own minimum.
Is name matching the same as star matching?
No. Name matching takes the first sound of each name to stand for a nakshatra. Star matching uses the nakshatra the Moon was really in at birth, which is what the kootas are read from. This tool does star matching.
Does this check Mangal dosha?
No. Mangal dosha (kuja dosha) and the 7th house need both full birth charts. The Kundli Matching Report checks them on both sides, with the same 36-guna table as this tool.
Does a high score guarantee a good marriage?
No. Ashtakoot is the traditional check. Astrojar has not measured it against how marriages turned out, so it is shown as the traditional reading, never as a promise.
