Mangal dosha (kuja dosha): meaning, how to check it, and when it is cancelled
What being Manglik means, the five houses that cause it, the cancellation rules, what our own test of it found, and the traditional remedies.
In short
Kuja dosha (Mangal dosha, or being Manglik) means Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart, counted from the Lagna and from the Moon. It is checked when two charts are matched for marriage, and it is nullified when both charts have it or when the other chart has the Sun, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in those houses (K. S. Charak, p. 451). In Astrojar's test on 500 dated marriages it did not predict which first marriages ended.

How do you check Mangal dosha in a kundli?

Find Mars in your kundli
In a North Indian chart, look for Ma; the number in its house is the sign.

Count from the Lagna
The Lagna is the 1st house. If Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, the dosha is there from the Lagna.

Count again with the Moon's house as the 1st. Charak asks for both counts (p. 451).

When is Mangal dosha cancelled?
Between the two charts (K. S. Charak, p. 451)
- Both charts have it The dosha in one chart balances the dosha in the other.
- A malefic balances it The other chart has the Sun, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house.
Inside one chart (later tradition)
- Mars in its own or exaltation sign Mars in Aries or Scorpio (its own signs) or Capricorn (exaltation).
- Jupiter with Mars Jupiter joining Mars, or aspecting it.
- Mars with the Moon Mars and the Moon in the same house (Chandra-Mangala).
- Mars in certain signs Mars in the 1st house in Aries or Leo; the 4th house in Scorpio; the 7th house in Capricorn or Cancer; the 8th house in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces; the 12th house in Taurus or Libra.
The rules inside one chart are not in BPHS or Charak; they are the common later tradition, and Astrojar's chart check applies exactly these.
Does Mangal dosha really affect marriage?
Older texts describe Mangal dosha in frightening terms. Astrojar tested it instead: on 500 public figures with recorded birth times and dated marriages, 207 first marriages ended. Mangal dosha, whether counted from the Lagna, the Moon or Venus, did not predict which ones. Charak himself says a strict reading may not be necessary when the two charts are otherwise favourable (p. 452), and that a marriage of true mutual love needs no matching at all (p. 450). So Astrojar reports it, with its cancellations, as one part of ashtakoot matching, never as a verdict on a marriage.
What are the remedies for Mangal dosha?
Traditional remedies pacify Mars. These are the ones Astrojar gives; no gemstone is suggested for a dosha.

Questions about Mangal dosha
What is kuja dosha?
Kuja dosha, also called Mangal dosha or being Manglik, is Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart, counted from the Lagna and also from the Moon. It is checked when two charts are matched for marriage (K. S. Charak, Elements of Vedic Astrology, p. 451).
How do I check if I am Manglik?
Find Mars in your kundli. Count the houses from the Lagna (the 1st house) to Mars, then count again from the Moon. If either count is 1, 4, 7, 8 or 12, Mars is in a dosha house. Then check the cancellations below.
When is Mangal dosha cancelled?
Between two charts, it is nullified when both have it, or when the other chart has the Sun, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in one of those houses (K. S. Charak, Elements of Vedic Astrology, p. 451). Later tradition adds cancellations inside one chart, such as Mars in its own sign or Jupiter aspecting Mars.
Does Manglik dosha get cancelled after 28 years?
Neither Charak nor BPHS gives an age after which it ends, so Astrojar does not use one. What it checks are the cancellations listed on this page.
Is Mangal dosha bad for marriage?
Traditionally it is a reason for careful matching. Astrojar tested it on 500 dated first marriages of public figures, 207 of which ended: Mangal dosha, counted from the Lagna, the Moon or Venus, did not predict which ones ended. So it is read as one factor in matching, never alone.
What is high and low Mangal dosha?
"High" and "low" Mangal dosha are modern labels; the classical rule only asks whether Mars is in one of the five houses. Astrojar says whether it is present, counted from where, and whether it is cancelled.
What are the remedies for kuja dosha?
The traditional remedies pacify Mars: its mantra, worship of Hanuman or Subrahmanya on Tuesdays, and charity of red lentils. Charak notes that remedial measures are sometimes prescribed (p. 451). No gemstone is needed for it.
