Gemstone astrology: which gemstone suits you, by Lagna

The gemstone of each planet, the rule for choosing one from your Lagna (ascendant), the gems to avoid, and how Astrojar decides, with sources.

In short

In gemstone astrology each planet has a gem, and wearing it strengthens that planet. So a gem suits you only when Parashara names its planet auspicious, or a giver of yoga, for your Lagna (ascendant), or it is your Lagna lord and he does not call it malefic (BPHS ch. 34 sl. 19-44). Astrojar never suggests a gem for a planet he calls malefic for your Lagna, and always adds: have your full chart checked first, then wear it for a short trial.

What is the gemstone of each planet?

These are the gems, substitutes, metals, fingers and days Astrojar uses in its remedies. The pairing of a gem with each planet comes from later tradition; BPHS itself does not list it.

Planet Gemstone Substitute (uparatna) Metal Finger First worn on
Sun Ruby (Manik) red garnet gold ring finger Sunday
Moon Pearl (Moti) moonstone silver little finger Monday
Mars Red Coral (Moonga) carnelian gold or copper ring finger Tuesday
Mercury Emerald (Panna) peridot or green tourmaline gold little finger Wednesday
Jupiter Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) yellow topaz or citrine gold index finger Thursday
Venus Diamond (Heera) white sapphire or zircon silver or platinum middle finger Friday
Saturn Blue Sapphire (Neelam) amethyst silver or panchadhatu middle finger Saturday
Rahu Hessonite (Gomed) None given silver or panchadhatu middle finger Saturday
Ketu Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) None given silver ring finger Tuesday

Which gemstone suits each Lagna?

Find your Lagna (the sign rising at birth, on your kundli). The table follows Parashara's list for each Lagna and is computed by the same code that chooses remedies in Astrojar's answers.

Lagna (ascendant) Lagna lord A gem may be considered for Parashara calls malefic: never a gem
Aries (Mesha) Mars Sun (Ruby), Mars (Red Coral), Jupiter (Yellow Sapphire) Mercury, Venus, Saturn
Taurus (Vrishabha) Venus Sun (Ruby), Saturn (Blue Sapphire) Moon, Jupiter, Venus
Gemini (Mithuna) Mercury Mercury (Emerald), Venus (Diamond) Sun, Mars, Jupiter
Cancer (Karka) Moon Moon (Pearl), Mars (Red Coral), Jupiter (Yellow Sapphire) Mercury, Venus
Leo (Simha) Sun Sun (Ruby), Mars (Red Coral), Jupiter (Yellow Sapphire) Mercury, Venus, Saturn

Libra (Tula) Venus Moon (Pearl), Mercury (Emerald), Venus (Diamond), Saturn (Blue Sapphire) Sun, Mars, Jupiter

BPHS ch. 34 sl. 19-44 (auspicious and malefic grahas for each Lagna); ch. 34 sl. 2-7 and 13 (why). This is a starting point, not a prescription: the strength and placement of the planet in your own chart decide.

How does Astrojar choose a gemstone?

  1. 1

Find the planets Parashara calls good for your Lagna

For each Lagna, BPHS ch. 34 sl. 19-44 names the planets that are auspicious and those that give a yoga (such as Mars for Cancer, which rules both the 5th and the 10th). Astrojar adds the Lagna lord, unless Parashara names it a malefic.

  2. 2

Leave out the malefics he names

Strengthening a planet strengthens everything it rules. Astrojar never suggests a gem for a planet Parashara calls malefic for your Lagna, and never for Rahu or Ketu automatically.

  3. 3

Pick the one that matters for the question

When you ask Astrojar about your career or marriage, it chooses the strongest of those planets for that matter. If none qualifies, it falls back on the Lagna lord, which supports the whole chart.

  4. 4

Pacify troublesome planets without a gem

A difficult running dasha lord, Saturn during Sade Sati, or the planet behind a dosha gets mantra, charity or worship, never a gemstone.

  5. 5

    Check, then try

A gem is always given with the same note: only after an astrologer checks your full chart, and after a short trial period.

Can you choose a gemstone by date of birth or Moon sign?

The rule above needs your Lagna, and the Lagna changes about every two hours, so it needs the time and place of birth as well as the date. Lists of "lucky stones" by Moon sign or by month of birth use other systems; Astrojar does not use them. If you know your birth details, the Horoscope Report or a question in the Astrojar app gives the remedy for your own chart. To find your Lagna and its lord, see the 1st house and the Lagna lord.

Questions about gemstones

What is gemstone astrology?

Gemstone astrology pairs each of the nine planets with a gem (Ruby for the Sun, Pearl for the Moon, Red Coral for Mars, Emerald for Mercury, Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter, Diamond for Venus, Blue Sapphire for Saturn, Hessonite for Rahu, Cat's Eye for Ketu). A gem is worn to strengthen its planet, so it is meant only for a planet that is good for your chart. The pairing comes from later tradition, not from BPHS.

Which gemstone should I wear according to my birth chart?

Astrojar follows Parashara's list for your Lagna (BPHS ch. 34 sl. 19-44): a gem is considered only for a planet he calls auspicious or yoga-giving for that Lagna, or for the Lagna lord unless he names it a malefic. The table on this page gives the result for each Lagna. Even then, have your whole chart checked and wear it for a short trial first.

Can I find my gemstone by date of birth alone?

Not reliably. The rule works from the Lagna (ascendant), which changes about every two hours, so it needs the birth time and place as well as the date. Birthstones by month of birth are a different, Western custom.

Which gemstones should not be worn?

Astrojar never suggests a gem for a planet Parashara calls malefic for your Lagna (the last column of the table), and never suggests the Hessonite and Cat's Eye of Rahu and Ketu automatically. Strengthening a planet strengthens everything it rules, the difficult houses too.

Is a substitute stone (uparatna) as good as the main gem?

Tradition offers cheaper substitutes such as red garnet for Ruby or yellow topaz for Yellow Sapphire. Astrojar lists them as the tradition gives them; it has not measured whether either one works.

Do gemstones really work?

Astrojar has not measured gemstones against outcomes, so it gives them as a traditional remedy, never as a promise. A gemstone is not a substitute for medical treatment, financial advice or your own effort.

Is the gem of my Lagna lord always safe?

Usually, since a strong Lagna lord counters evils (BPHS ch. 10 sl. 4). But Parashara names a few Lagna lords among the malefics of their own Lagna, because they also rule a difficult house: Venus for Taurus, which also rules the 6th. Astrojar follows him, so Diamond is not suggested for a Taurus Lagna.
