The 6th house in astrology (Ari bhava) shows enemies, wounds and ulcers, the maternal uncle and the step-mother (BPHS ch. 11 sl. 7). It is one of the three difficult houses (dusthanas), with the 8th and 12th. The 6th house lord is the planet that owns the sign on the 6th: Mercury for an Aries Lagna, Venus for Taurus. BPHS counts a planet that owns the 6th among those that give difficult results (ch. 34 sl. 2-7).

How is the 6th house read? The classical rules
- 6th and 8th lords together in the Lagna Ailments, of a kind that follows the planets joining them (BPHS ch. 17 sl. 9-12).
- Jupiter joining the 6th and 8th lords in the Lagna The ailment they would bring is removed (ch. 17 sl. 9-12).
- 6th and 11th lords exchange signs Money lost through opponents (ch. 17 sl. 26).
- 6th and 12th lords exchange signs Spleen complaints (ch. 17 sl. 13-19).
One rule never decides a chart on its own: the classical method weighs the house, its lord, the planets in and aspecting it, and the running dasha together.
