The 9th house in astrology (Dharma bhava) shows fortune, religion and pilgrimage, the spouse's brother and the brother's wife (BPHS ch. 11 sl. 10). It is a trine, the house of fortune, and BPHS also reads the father's standing from it (ch. 20). The 9th house lord is the planet that owns the sign on the 9th: Jupiter for an Aries Lagna, Saturn for Taurus. Jupiter in the 9th with the 9th lord in an angle brings abundant fortune (BPHS ch. 20 sl. 27-28).

How is the 9th house read? The classical rules
- Jupiter in the 9th, the 9th lord in an angle and a strong Lagna lord Extremely fortunate (BPHS ch. 20 sl. 1-2).
- 9th lord in an angle, aspected by Jupiter A father of high standing (ch. 20 sl. 6).
- An exalted Sun with the 9th lord in the 11th Virtuous, favoured by those in authority and devoted to the father (ch. 20 sl. 8-9).
- Lagna and 9th lords exchange signs, with Jupiter in the 7th Wealth and vehicles (ch. 20 sl. 29).
- A debilitated 9th lord with Mars in the 10th or 12th A father of modest means (ch. 20 sl. 4).
One rule never decides a chart on its own: the classical method weighs the house, its lord, the planets in and aspecting it, and the running dasha together.
