In short

A dosha calculator checks a birth chart for combinations the tradition treats as weak points. The best known are Mangal Dosha (Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house) and Sade Sati (Saturn passing the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon). Astrojar's free chart card shows both from your date, time and place of birth; the table below gives every dosha it checks.

The doshas Astrojar checks

Dosha How it is formed Source Read more
Mangal (Kuja) Dosha Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna; also checked from the Moon and from Venus K. S. Charak, ch. XXVII, p. 451 (from Venus: later tradition) Kuja dosha
Sade Sati Saturn passing through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon sign, about seven and a half years Phaladeepika ch. 26 (transits) Sade Sati by Moon sign
Kaal Sarp All seven planets on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis; named from Rahu's house, Ananta (1st) to Sheshnaga (12th) Later tradition (not in BPHS), as Astrojar's rules record it Below
Pitra Dosha The Sun and Saturn together in the 9th house Later tradition (not in BPHS), as Astrojar's rules record it Below
Guru Chandal Jupiter in the same house as Rahu; cancelled when Jupiter is in its own or exaltation sign Later tradition (not in BPHS), as Astrojar's rules record it Below
Grahan Dosha The Sun (Surya Grahan) or the Moon (Chandra Grahan) in the same house as Rahu Later tradition (not in BPHS), as Astrojar's rules record it Below
Angaraka Dosha Mars in the same house as Rahu Later tradition (not in BPHS), as Astrojar's rules record it Below
Vish (Punarphoo) Dosha Saturn in the same house as the Moon Later tradition (not in BPHS), as Astrojar's rules record it Below

"In the same house" means the same sign: Astrojar counts houses whole-sign from the Lagna. Where the source column says later tradition, the rule is not in BPHS; Astrojar keeps it because it is widely used, and says where each rule comes from.

Mangal Dosha and when it is cancelled

Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna forms Mangal (Kuja) Dosha, read mainly for marriage. Astrojar also checks the same houses from the Moon and from Venus.

Astrojar's rules treat it as cancelled when Mars is in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn); when Jupiter joins or aspects Mars; when Mars is with the Moon; and in these house and sign positions: the 1st in Aries or Leo, the 4th in Scorpio, the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, the 8th in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces, and the 12th in Taurus or Libra. The full guide is kuja dosha, and the kundli matching report checks it for a couple.

Sade Sati and Shani dosha

Sade Sati is Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year passage through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon sign, in a rising, a peak and a setting phase. Saturn in the 4th from the Moon is Ardhashtama or Kantaka Shani, and in the 8th Ashtama Shani. Because it is read from the Moon sign, Sade Sati needs only the birth date in most cases. See the dates for every Moon sign in Sade Sati by Moon sign.

Kaal Sarp Dosha

When all seven planets, the Sun to Saturn, lie on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, the chart has Kaal Sarp. It is named from the house Rahu is in: Ananta (1st), Kulika (2nd), Vasuki (3rd), Shankhapala (4th), Padma (5th), Mahapadma (6th), Takshaka (7th), Karkotaka (8th), Shankhachuda (9th), Ghataka (10th), Vishdhara (11th), Sheshnaga (12th). Kaal Sarp is not in BPHS; it is a later combination, and Astrojar records it as such.

Pitra, Guru Chandal, Grahan, Angaraka and Vish Dosha

These are conjunctions, two planets in the same house. Pitra Dosha, as Astrojar checks it, is the Sun and Saturn together in the 9th house, the house of the father and ancestors. Guru Chandal is Jupiter with Rahu. Grahan Dosha is the Sun or the Moon with Rahu. Angaraka Dosha is Mars with Rahu. Vish Dosha is Saturn with the Moon. Other books define some of them differently; these are the definitions Astrojar's rules use.

When an uncancelled dosha bears on your question, Astrojar's remedy suggestions start from the planet behind it, such as Mars for Mangal Dosha; see gemstones by Lagna for how a gem is chosen.

Questions about doshas

What is a dosha in astrology?

A dosha is a combination of planets that the texts single out as a weak point in a chart: Mars in certain houses (Mangal Dosha), Saturn passing near the Moon sign (Sade Sati), all planets between Rahu and Ketu (Kaal Sarp) and others. It is something to look at, not a verdict on a life.

How do I check the doshas in my kundali?

From your date, time and place of birth. Astrojar's free chart card shows Mangal Dosha (and whether it is cancelled) and Sade Sati (whether it is running and when it ends); the other doshas on this page are weighed in Astrojar's answers when they bear on your question.

Can I check doshas by date of birth alone?

Not fully. Mangal Dosha from the Lagna and Kaal Sarp's name depend on the houses, which need the birth time. Sade Sati needs only the Moon sign, which the date usually gives.

Is Mangal Dosha cancelled in some charts?

Yes, often. Astrojar's rules treat it as cancelled when Mars is in its own or exaltation sign, when Jupiter joins or aspects Mars, when Mars is with the Moon, and in certain house and sign positions.

What is Shani dosha?

People usually mean Saturn's hard transits over the Moon sign: Sade Sati (the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon), Ardhashtama or Kantaka Shani (the 4th) and Ashtama Shani (the 8th).

Are doshas dangerous?

No dosha on its own decides anything. Many charts have at least one, several are commonly cancelled, and the whole chart, its strengths and the running dasha matter more than any single combination.
