In short

A free kundali is your birth chart: where the Sun, the Moon, the five planets, Rahu and Ketu were in the 12 signs at the moment and place you were born, with the 12 houses counted from the rising sign (Lagna). It needs your date, exact time and place of birth. Astrojar makes it free: the D1 rashi chart in North or South Indian style, the D9 navamsa and D10, every planet's sign, house, degree and nakshatra, and your Vimshottari dasha dates.

What you need to make a kundli

Three details: the date, the exact time and the place of birth. The time matters most. A new sign rises in the east about every two hours, so the Lagna and every house depend on it; near the edge of a sign a few minutes can change the Lagna.

The best sources for the time are the birth certificate and hospital records. Without a time, the Moon sign is usually still right (the Moon stays about two and a half days in a sign), but the Lagna and the houses are not, and the nakshatra can change during the day.

The parts of a kundli

The Lagna is the sign rising at birth; it becomes the 1st house. See the 12 lagnas.

The 12 houses each show a part of life, counted from the Lagna, and each is ruled by the lord of its sign. See houses in kundli.

The nine planets (grahas) sit in the signs and houses: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. See the planets in astrology.

The rashi and nakshatra are the Moon's sign and star. The rashi is used for transits such as Sade Sati; the nakshatra starts the Vimshottari dasha and is used in matching. See rashi by date of birth and the 27 nakshatras.

Doshas and yogas are combinations of planets that the texts single out. See dosha in kundali.

North Indian and South Indian charts

Both styles show the same rashi chart. The North Indian chart is a square of diamonds: the houses stay fixed, the Lagna is always the top centre box, and the sign numbers are written in. The South Indian chart is a square of 12 boxes: the signs stay fixed (Pisces top left, then clockwise), and the Lagna's box is marked. Astrojar draws your chart in either style; you choose it in the app.

How to read your kundli

Start with the Lagna and its lord, then the house that matches your question and its lord, then the dasha running now. The step-by-step guide how to read kundli walks through a worked example; for matching two charts, see the free star matching. For a written reading of the whole chart and the year ahead, see the yearly horoscope report.

Questions about kundli

What is a kundli?

A kundli (janam kundli, jathakam, birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment and place of your birth: the sign rising in the east (the Lagna), the 12 houses counted from it, and the signs and houses of the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

Is the kundali on Astrojar really free?

Yes. Signing up is free and your chart card, birth chart, navamsa and dasha dates are free to see. Your first 3 questions are free too. Written reports are paid and optional.

Can I make a kundli without my birth time?

Only partly. Without the time the Lagna and the houses cannot be fixed, because a new sign rises about every two hours. The Moon's sign is usually still right, since the Moon stays about two and a half days in a sign; its nakshatra can change during the day.

What is a rashi chart?

The rashi chart is the main birth chart, the D1: the 12 signs with the planets in them, drawn from the Lagna. In Indian languages it is also called the lagna kundali or janma kundali.

What is the difference between North and South Indian charts?

They show the same chart. The North Indian style keeps the houses fixed, with the Lagna in the top centre box, and writes the sign numbers in; the South Indian style keeps the signs fixed and marks the Lagna's box.

Which ayanamsa and house system does Astrojar use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa on the sidereal zodiac, and whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna.
