When Astrojar suggests Surya's remedies
Astrojar suggests Surya's remedies in two cases. To strengthen the Sun when it matters for your question and is good for your Lagna (Mesha, Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika and Dhanu). To pacify it when the Sun's dasha is running and it is not good for your Lagna and is weak (debilitated, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th house), or when the Sun is behind an uncancelled dosha in your chart. Pacifying uses the mantra, charity, worship and the temple, never the gemstone.
The Sun's gemstone
Ruby (Manik) strengthens the Sun, so Astrojar suggests it only when the Sun is good for your Lagna: by BPHS ch. 34, for Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Simha (Leo), Vrishchika (Scorpio) and Dhanu (Sagittarius) Lagnas. BPHS calls the Sun malefic for Mithuna (Gemini), Tula (Libra) and Meena (Pisces) Lagnas; there the stone is not for you. Even where it is allowed, only after an astrologer checks your full chart, and after a short trial period. The substitute stone is red garnet.
How to chant the Surya mantra
Chant the mantra 108 times on a mala, ideally on Sundays. The full japa of 7,000 is the count traditionally completed for the Sun, often over many days or by a priest. The Surya Yantra is kept in the prayer place and worshipped on Sundays. Astrojar's app has a mantra counter for your own chart's mantra.
Remedies support effort; they do not replace it, and no remedy is promised to change an outcome.
