When Astrojar suggests Mangal's remedies
Astrojar suggests Mangal's remedies in two cases. To strengthen Mars when it matters for your question and is good for your Lagna (Mesha, Karka, Simha, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena). To pacify it when Mars's dasha is running and it is not good for your Lagna, or when Mars is behind an uncancelled dosha in your chart (Mangal Dosha). Pacifying uses the mantra, charity, worship and the temple, never the gemstone.
Mars's gemstone
Red Coral (Moonga) strengthens Mars, so Astrojar suggests it only when Mars is good for your Lagna: by BPHS ch. 34, for Mesha (Aries), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces) Lagnas. BPHS calls Mars malefic for Mithuna (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius) Lagnas; there the stone is not for you. Even where it is allowed, only after an astrologer checks your full chart, and after a short trial period. The substitute stone is carnelian.
How to chant the Mangal mantra
Chant the mantra 108 times on a mala, ideally on Tuesdays. The full japa of 10,000 is the count traditionally completed for Mars, often over many days or by a priest.
