When Astrojar suggests Shani's remedies
Astrojar suggests Shani's remedies in two cases. To strengthen Saturn when it matters for your question and is good for your Lagna (Vrishabha, Tula, Makara and Kumbha). To pacify it when Saturn's transit over your Moon sign is Sade Sati or Ashtama Shani, or when Saturn's dasha is running and it is not good for your Lagna, or when Saturn is behind an uncancelled dosha in your chart. Pacifying uses the mantra, charity, worship and the temple, never the gemstone.
Saturn's gemstone
Blue Sapphire (Neelam) strengthens Saturn, so Astrojar suggests it only when Saturn is good for your Lagna: by BPHS ch. 34, for Vrishabha (Taurus), Tula (Libra), Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius) Lagnas. BPHS calls Saturn malefic for Mesha (Aries), Simha (Leo), Vrishchika (Scorpio) and Meena (Pisces) Lagnas; there the stone is not for you. Even where it is allowed, only after an astrologer checks your full chart, and after a short trial period. The substitute stone is amethyst.
How to chant the Shani mantra
Chant the mantra 108 times on a mala, ideally on Saturdays. The full japa of 23,000 is the count traditionally completed for Saturn, often over many days or by a priest. The Shani Yantra is kept in the prayer place and worshipped on Saturdays. Astrojar's app has a mantra counter for your own chart's mantra.
Remedies support effort; they do not replace it, and no remedy is promised to change an outcome.
