Mercury in astrology: speech, intellect and skill
What Mercury signifies in Vedic astrology, its signs, exaltation and friendships, and how it is read in a chart.
In short
Mercury in astrology (Budha) signifies speech (BPHS ch. 3 sl. 12-13). It owns Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces (ch. 3 sl. 49-54). A strong Mercury gives intellect, speech and skill; Astrojar reads career, business, education, and mind and peace with it.

How is Mercury read? The classical rules
- Mercury exalted Gives its good results in full: intellect, speech and skill (BPHS ch. 3 sl. 59-60).
- Mercury in its moolatrikona Gives three quarters of its good results (ch. 3 sl. 59-60).
- Mercury in its own sign Gives half of its good results (ch. 3 sl. 59-60).
- Mercury in a friend's sign Gives a quarter of its good results (ch. 3 sl. 59-60).
- Mercury debilitated or in an enemy's sign Its good results are nil (ch. 3 sl. 59-60).
- Mercury in deep exaltation, with the 9th lord in the 9th Abundant fortune after the 36th year (BPHS ch. 20 sl. 27-28).
- Mercury in the Lagna, with a benefic 4th lord aspected by benefics Honour from relatives (ch. 15 sl. 5).
One rule never decides a chart on its own: the classical method weighs the planet, the houses it owns and occupies, the planets with and aspecting it, and the running dasha together.
