Zodiac compatibility
Zodiac sign compatibility: rashi matching for all 12 Moon signs
How two Moon signs match in Vedic astrology: the 15 Ashtakoota points the signs decide, Bhakoot dosha, and what only the birth stars can tell.
In short
Zodiac sign compatibility in Vedic astrology compares the two Moon signs (rashis). The signs decide 4 of the 8 kootas, 15 of the 36 points: Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot. Pairs 2/12, 6/8 or 5/9 apart have Bhakoot dosha and lose 7 points. The other 21 points need the birth nakshatras, so a sign match is never the full answer.
Rashi compatibility table: points from the Moon signs (out of 15)
Find the bride's Moon sign on the left and the groom's along the top. A range means the score depends on which half of Dhanu or Makara the Moon is in.

Two Moon signs settle four of the eight kootas: Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Graha Maitri (5) and Bhakoot (7), 15 of the 36 points. Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi (21 points, Nadi alone 8) need each person's birth nakshatra, so no sign table can give the full score. Star matching gives all 36 points from the two nakshatras.
What is Bhakoot dosha?
Bhakoot counts one Moon sign from the other. When they are 2nd and 12th, 6th and 8th, or 5th and 9th from each other, Bhakoot scores 0 of its 7 points: this is called Bhakoot dosha. Every other pair scores the full 7.
| Signs apart | Bhakoot |
|---|---|
| 1/1 (same sign) | 7 of 7 |
| 2/12 | 0 of 7: Bhakoot dosha |
| 3/11 | 7 of 7 |
| 4/10 | 7 of 7 |
| 5/9 | 0 of 7: Bhakoot dosha |
| 6/8 | 0 of 7: Bhakoot dosha |
| 7/7 | 7 of 7 |
Astrojar scores Bhakoot exactly as the table above and does not apply cancellations to it; it is one koota of eight, read with the rest of both charts.
Questions about zodiac sign compatibility
Which rashi is compatible with which rashi?
From the Moon signs alone, the table gives each pair's points out of 15. Pairs that are 2/12, 6/8 or 5/9 from each other lose Bhakoot's 7 points. The full match also needs the birth nakshatras.
Is zodiac compatibility the same as kundli matching?
It is part of it. Kundli matching (Ashtakoota) scores 36 points; the Moon signs give 15 of them, and the birth stars give the rest.
Is this my sun sign or my Moon sign?
The Moon sign (rashi). Indian matching always uses the Moon. If you only know your sun sign, see sun sign by date of birth and rashi by date of birth.
Does a low score mean we should not marry?
No. Charak himself writes that a marriage of true mutual love needs no matching at all, and that a strict reading may not be necessary when the two charts are otherwise favourable. The score is one traditional check, never a verdict.
