In short
The 1st house is the Lagna, the sign rising at birth: it shows your body, appearance, intellect, vigour and nature (BPHS ch. 11 sl. 2). The lord of 1st house (the Lagna lord) is the planet that owns the Lagna's sign, for example Mars for an Aries Lagna. It is the most important planet in the chart: it is the lord of an angle and a trine at once (BPHS ch. 34 sl. 2-7).

How is the 1st house read? The classical rules
- Lagna lord in an angle or a trine Comfort of the body at all times (BPHS ch. 12 sl. 1-2).
- Lagna lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or with a malefic Physical well-being is reduced (ch. 12 sl. 1-2).
- Lagna lord debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign Health needs more care (ch. 12 sl. 1-2).
- A benefic in the 1st house A pleasing appearance (ch. 12 sl. 4).
- Lagna lord, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle or trine Long life, wealth and intelligence (ch. 12 sl. 5-7).
One rule never decides a chart on its own: the classical method weighs the house, its lord, the planets in and aspecting it, and the running dasha together.

Who is the lord of the 1st house?
The planet that owns your Lagna's sign: Mars for Aries or Scorpio, Venus for Taurus or Libra, Mercury for Gemini or Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius or Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn or Aquarius.
What does an empty 1st house mean?
An empty 1st house is normal and not a weakness. It is read from the 1st house lord: where it sits, how strong it is, and which planets aspect the Lagna (BPHS ch. 11 sl. 14-16).
What does the 1 house in astrology show?
The self: body, looks, intellect, vigour, happiness and sorrow, and your nature (BPHS ch. 11 sl. 2). Astrojar reads health and peace of mind from it.
What about Uranus in the 1st house?
Vedic astrology does not use Uranus: the classical texts work with nine grahas, the seven visible planets plus Rahu and Ketu. Readings of Uranus in the 1st house come from Western astrology.
Should the 1st house be read from the Moon too?
Yes, BPHS says the same rules can be applied counting from the Moon (ch. 12 sl. 11). Astrojar reads both.
